AideRSS + GoogleReader Firefox extension

AideRRS is a great tool for those of us that have a lot of feeds in Google reader. It can filter the posts according to a rating set by PostRank, a system that ranks post from the "5C`s" criterias: creating, critiquing, chatting, collecting, and clicking.

Great! :) Now you dont have to browse 400 useless posts to find the one you really care about !

Moving into Firefox 3

Ive been a Opera fan for years now, and Ive had Firefox as my second choice browser. I never really got around to customizing my Firefox, but 4 days ago i decided to give it a go.

Oh my, have it changed my way of surfing the web. In Opera I got stuck in the old "browse-all-bookmarks-then-find-something-else-to-do" habbit. Now its never boring. Always new things to discover, share and connect information and links. All of this because of Firefox. I never used services like Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious and such before. Neither did i blog...

The reason beeing Opera and the lack of support for these services.

Anyways, here is my Firefox setup with links and explanations:

First of all (if you havent already...): Firefox 3

Then its time for the extentions, which is the fun part :P

Adblock plus is a must. Get rid of all those ads flashing all over the sites you love

All-in-One Sidebar to get an Opera like sidebar to manage all your bookmarks, downloads, history, and extensions.

Flagfox. Display a small flag in bottom right corner to tell you where in the world the server is located.

Stylish. Get custom styles for your favourite sites. Ive styled my gmail, my google calendar and my google reader so far. Its awsome.

Webmail Notifier to tell you when you have new mail in your inbox.

StumbleUpon (I guess you need an account, which you can get from stumbleupon.com). When bored, press a button and you will get a random site from the categories you`ve selected in your account setup. To tell you the truth I can sit for hours doing this...

Digg Firefox Extension is an extra menu that gives you the top, most popular, latest stories submitted by users at Digg.com. Always new stuff to discover, and I also noticed that I get alot of the nerdy news even before they hit the online publications here in Norway :P

Delicious bookmarks. Save your bookmarks online, so you
  1. Never loose them
  2. Can access them from any computer
  3. Can share them with friends
Dashblog - This is the extension i use when i want to capture a video, an image, some text or whatever and post it right into my blog. The post "It hurts - failblog.com" was posted with this addon.

Google Notebook. Nice when you have temporary text or links to keep for later.

And at last, the theme I use atm. Aero Fox

RocketDock - A great replacement for Quicklaunch

I love customizing my Windows, and I love eyecandy. This little launchbar is kinda what ive always wanted, and its free. What you get is a Mac OS X style launch, and application bar, which is not only practical, but also looks good.

You might wanna configure it somewhat after installing, like downloading new, higher resolution icons for your favourite programs, and adding some nice docklets to extend the functionality. With some brain, im sure you will be up and running in 10 minutes, with the new love in your life :P

Download the bar, new icons and docklets from http://rocketdock.com/

Below is the introvideo from their site

Defraggler - A quick defragment program

A few weeks ago I had major graphic lag when playing World of Warcraft. Every 10 seconds or so the screen froze for about 1 seconds. Annoying? Hell yes. I was just about to reinstall WoW when i found the solution; Defraggler.

Ive used defrag programs before, but not often since they take ages to finish. This program is different. Its capable of defragmenting a single file or folder!

I ran it in my WoW-folder and voila! No more graphic lag!

Get it at http://www.defraggler.com, Im sure you`ll find it usefull for the overall performance of your computer. And btw, its free! :P

Launchy - Command based program launcher

One of these days i discovered Launchy. Its a neat little command tool that will help you speed the starting of programs, and even searching the web.

Alt-space and it will pop up, ready to help.

The basic program launching feature works kinda like the Windows search thingy, but its way quicker.

You can customize it to include whatever files you want, from whatever folders you choose. By default it only searches for shortcut files in your start-menu and quicklaunch.

The feature I use the most is the Web launch. This is how that looks. Its basicly a very quick way to search your favourite sites, you dont even have to have your browser running.

"Youtube" -> tab -> "funny video" launches a search for "funny video" on Youtube.

How to set up your favourite search engines from the Options - plugins menu:

  • Go to the site you want to include.
  • Do a search for "test"
  • Go to Launchy -> options -> plugins, select Weby and click the + at the bottom
  • Now add the name and the adress of the site.
  • Now go back to the site you did the search, copy the URL like the bolded part here:
  • That is, everything behind the basic site URL.
  • Paste that into the Query field, and replace "test" with "%s" (without quotes)
Now your ready to search the web!

Im sure you will figure out how usefull this is when you start using it.

Go grab it at www.launchy.net
